Survival Resources

In the days following a house fire, there are a lot of different people who show up. It can be confusing to know what these people are there for and what they can offer you.

Here is a list of the most common types of services you will need after your home has been burned. These services will be deducted from your fire insurance claim, so make sure to choose wisely.

We offer preferred pricing to our clients for many of these services. Contact us for more information.

Restoration companies are usually among the first responders following a house fire. Their job is to clean up the mess and to preserve and protect your home from more damage. You will also want to make sure to have a certificate of occupancy (COO) to reoccupy your property after the fire. A COO is a document that indicates your home has met all of the code requirements for your city. A restoration company can assist with obtaining the COO. However, you’ll want to be sure to ask the restoration company about their experience with COOs. The restoration companies will refer our clients to are all knowledgeable about the COO process.

Claims adjusters connected to your insurance company will usually offer around 80% to 85% of your insurance claim. Don’t take the first offer! What you, and most people don’t know, can be harmful. There is an opportunity to get more money for your claim. It’s important to know that private claims adjusters working on your behalf can negotiate with your insurance company. They can often get you a lot more money on your fire damage insurance claim, averaging much as 100 to 150 percent of the claim. Obtaining much more for your fire damage insurance claim is possible whether you restore your home or sell it after a fire.

Temporary housing services will make sure you have somewhere to stay after the fire. Your insurance company will often place you in a hotel for several weeks or months. However, there are other options that your insurance will likely cover such as condos or apartments. These options may be more comfortable for your family. But they may not be offered to you being a displaced homeowner.

Board-up companies make sure your home is properly and safely secured after the fire. The fire department has its own board-up companies. Your insurance claim begins being used up when you start tapping into these and other services after a fire. The fire department has its own list of board-up companies, but they may not be the most cost-effective choice.

Transportation services may be needed if cars were damaged in the fire. Again, these services will be deducted from your fire damage insurance claim, so you’ll want to explore your options.

General contractors can play a role after a fire in your home. A general contractor is great for adding square footage or making upgrades outside of what the restoration company does and what your insurance covers. Do not use a general contractor for restoration. You will want to be sure to work with a reputable restoration company to obtain the COO.

Pet care and assistance services may be needed if your pet was injured in the fire. Or, you may be in temporary housing that does not allow pets and need to find shelter for your pet.

Basic survival kits are important. You’ve just lost everything in the fire. You will need toiletries, bottled water and other essentials. We offer I Care Kits with fire survival essentials – just contact us to receive one. You can also contact your local Red Cross for additional disaster relief support.

Counseling services will be important. A house fire is traumatic for the whole family. Having this type of support will help you and your family survive the house fire experience.

Support Groups are another valuable resource for managing the trauma and stress of the fire. They help you feel less alone. We can connect you and your family to support groups so that you can meet others experiencing the same things as you.
